Before you buy anything
Test your soil pH first
Your soil's pH level is like a health score for your dirt. It tells you whether your soil is acidic (sour), neutral, or alkaline (sweet). Most Aussie lawns do best between pH 6.0 and 7.0.
If your soil pH is off, your grass can't absorb nutrients properly — even if you're feeding it regularly. It's like eating a big meal but not being able to digest it.
Weed killers can be acidic
Some common weed killers are acidic and can lower your soil pH over time. If you've been spraying weeds regularly, your soil might have become too acidic for your grass to thrive.
Fertilisers shift your pH
Many fertilisers — especially the cheaper ones — are acidic too. Years of fertilising without checking pH can slowly make your soil too sour for healthy grass growth.
