Soft Leaf Buffalo Grass
Buffalo is Australia’s no. 1 lawn type. If you dont know what lawn you have, chances are its Buffalo or St Augustine in North America. This type of grass is a soft and broad leaf variety that is highly durable, easy to maintain and weed resistant.
It is also quite shade tolerant and does not require sun all the time. The lawn is fairly drought tolerant which is ideal for rural areas. The lawn is soft and hard wearing making it the ideal surface for children and pets to play on. There aren’t many negatives about the grass variety, provided that you maintain the grass appropriately.

Couch Grass or Hybrid Bermuda
Couch in Australia or Bermuda in US, it features fine leaves and a rich deep green colour. Bermuda grass copes exceptionally well with high temperatures and long periods of drought but comes into its own as a hardy solution for high traffic areas.
Couch grass variety is self-repairing, shade tolerant and fantastic in winter.
Couch requires regular mowing, a cylinder mower is the best, and it can build up thatch which needs to be removed regularly to ensure health
Kikuyu Variety
Unlike the Couch which thrives when it is cut to a low 10-20 mm, the Kikuyu enjoys a longer growth of around 25-50 mm. This grass variety is known for being a tough and durable grass variety because it tolerates dry summer periods well. The variety is self-repairing and ideal for pets as it does not harbour too many pests and diseases.
While the grass variety is ideal all year round, it does require regular mowing because it can grow rapidly due to its dense characterises. Its tolerance in waterlogged conditions makes it ideal for areas where it rains regularly. Otherwise, its lush green appearance is favoured by all.
Zoysia Varieties
Zoysia is a fineleaf, shade and sun tolerant grass that exhibits good drought tolerance qualities. Developed in Australia through extensive global research, this grass variety is ideal for the unique Australian climate conditions and is extremely versatile. Given its scientifically backed design and breeding conditions, this turf is low-allergenic, can be mowed at a wide range of heights and survives during sunny and freezing temperatures.
For land owners who want a grass variety with minimal maintenance and care requirements, look no further than the Zoysia. In addition, it is also weed and insect resistant and ideal for play, high traffic and low use environments.

Each grass has its positives and negatives, there are trade offs and of course cost. There are tonnes and tonnes of information about each grass this is just a small summary for a novice
The majority of people out there will get Buffalo rolled out by their builder, it gets layed on top of builder fill and clay, they will add the minimum soil depth required and roll the turf on. This will serve its purpose but wont give you that strength.
A few well selected products and a little bit of work can make the grass much more enjoyable and take up less of your time to maintain.
